Forest School

Forest School is an important and exciting part of Acorns nursery life. Our qualified Forest School Leaders ensure that the pre-school groups explore and enjoy the great outdoors using the environment as our outdoor classroom.  Children enjoy exploring in our forest school areas, creating muddy treats in our mud kitchens, going on mini-beast hunts and building mini-beast mansions.

Forest School endeavours to involve every individual, engaging them in practical fun outdoor activities.  It is child centred and allows the children to learn what interests them not what is prescribed by others.  “Forest School is an inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults, regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self esteem through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland area’ (Forestry Commission 2009).

Most studies have focused on the positive impact on learning and dispositions for learning.  At Acorns, Forest School sessions aim-

To increase self esteem and self confidence

To improve social skills

To contribute to the development of language and communication skills

To improve physical motor skills

To improve motivation and encourage concentration

To contribute to children’s knowledge and understanding of the environment
